Event Story: RIT Women’s Soccer Match
The RIT Women’s Soccer team shuts out Skidmore College with a 3-0-win last Friday.
On October 19th, 2019, the RIT Women’s Soccer team took on their opponent at home, the Women’s Soccer team of Skidmore College, winning the game 3-0.
Coming into this game, RIT had an 8-3 Win/Loss record and just came off a 2-0 win over ST. Lawrence University. I was lucky enough to already know one of the women on RIT’s team and got her thoughts on the upcoming game. Her name is Alyssa Salls, and she is the starting goalkeeper for the women’s team. I asked her about how prepared she was for the game and she responded with “I am so prepared for this game, so prepared I’m anxious”. I was also able to speak over the phone with the Head Coach of the team, Liz Masterson who answered a couple of my questions before their game. I first asked her how the team had done so far considering their 8-3 record. Masterson responded with “We have been doing really well this season” and saying that “Our 3 losses were all to opponents that are ranked top in the 15 nationally”. I then asked what her predictions for this game and the season moving forward, and her response was “We should be able to have a lot of success today if we have been showing up the way we intend to”.
At the game, the first half started with pretty even play on both sides. RIT changed that trend by scoring the first point in the 24th minute. The team looked better past that point and were connecting more on their passes and keeping the ball off of their side of the field. The team scored again in the last couple minutes of the first half, making it a 2-0 lead. Right before halftime, I was able to ask an audience member his thoughts on the game. Liam Abrochta, a 2nd year student here at RIT, answered with “It’s a cold day but the athletes seem to be handling it well. Skidmore does not seem to be playing to the level of RIT. It’s only the first half though, so we don’t know for sure”. Moving into the second half of the game, RIT continued to control the game, scoring again in the 60th minute to make it 3-0. For the rest of the game, RIT kept the ball on Skidmore’s side for the most part until the game ended, with a final score 3-0. After RIT’s win, I asked Alyssa what her thoughts were going towards the next game that Saturday. She happily responded with “Excitement. We want to come into tomorrow’s game and play as hard as we played today and take home another win!”.
The RIT Women’s Soccer team went on to, again shut out their competition on Saturday with a 3-0 over RPI. The team advances to a record of 10-3, with their next game being at home against University of Rochester on October 24th.
